Discussion Topic: Solid State Lighting Technology and Market Trends

The rapid development of Taiwan's optoelectronic industry in recent years has been remarkable. The industry sectors of optical storage, display, imaging and optoelectronic components in Taiwan are among the top producers in the world. In this CLEO/PR 2003 Industrial Forum, we will give an overview of Taiwan's optoelectronic industry in general and in particular the emerging technology using solid state light sources for general illumination and lighting applications will be discussed in detail. Especially, its market potential, technologic trends and future development direction will be assessed by leading experts in the fields. A US$ 40 or NT$ 1200 (before or on November 15, 2003) or US$ 50 or NT$ 1500 (after November 15, 2003) fee per person is required for participation.

Dr. Yung S. Liu is Fellow and VP of Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) in Hsinchu, Taiwan, and currently serves as General Director of the Opto-Electronics and Systems Labs (OES). He received his Ph.D. degree in Applied and Engineering Physics from Cornell University and BS in Physics from National Taiwan University.

Prior to joining ITRI in 1998, he was with GE Corporate R& D Center in Schenectady, New York where he had held various responsibilities managing programs in optical data communication, advanced interconnect, solid state lasers and nonlinear optical devices. He received numerous awards for his technical and management achievements. In 1998, Dr. Liu was selected by Industry Week's as one of the "50 R&D Stars to Watch" for his leadership role in a DARPA program that led to the development of high speed parallel optical interconnect using 32-channel VCSEL array in advanced digital systems.

Dr. Liu is Fellow of the Optical Society of America (OSA), Fellow of PSC, a Senior Member of IEEE, and a member of American Physical Society, and SPIE. He has authored over 70 publications and holds 28 US patents. Currently, he is President of Chinese Optical Engineering Society, and a founding member and President of the Taiwan Optical Communication Industry Alliance (founded in 2001) and of the Solid State Lighting Industry Association (founded in 2002).

M. George Craford obtained a Ph.D. degree in physics from the University of Illinois in 1967. Craford began his professional career as a research physicist at Monsanto Chemical Company, before joining the Hewlett Packard Company in 1979. He is currently the Chief Technology Officer of Lumileds Lighting, a joint venture of Agilent Technologies and Philips Lighting, located in San Jose,California.

Craford's research has focused mainly on the development of visible light emitting diodes using a variety of compound-semiconductor materials. At Monsanto his group developed nitrogen-doped GaAsP technology and, at Hewlett Packard, pioneered the development of AlInGaP LED's, anddeveloped AlGaAs and InGaN products.

Craford is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and a Fellow of the IEEE. He has been honored with awards from various groups including IEEE, Optical Society of America, the Materials Research Society, and the Electrochemical Society.

Dr. Ferguson is a native of Scotland and attended Heriot Watt University in Edinburgh, Scotland where he received a Bachelor of Science with Honors in 1984. He continued his studies at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland, obtaining a Master of Science in. 1986, and his Ph.D. 1989 in optoelectronics and compound semiconductor materials and devices.

Dr. Ferguson joined Georgia Tech from EMCORE Corporation where he served as a Director of Research. Prior to this, he worked with interdisciplinary research groups at Northwestern University in Evanston Illinois and at the Imperial College in London, England. Dr. Ferguson has a particular interest in research that involves an interdisciplinary approach that is often conducted in collaboration with industry partners. He also has been actively involved in the entrepreneurial process of establishing new companies.

Dr. Ferguson has over 100 referenced publications, authored three book chapters, and currently is editing two books, and holds four patents

    Prof. Dr. Michael Heuken was born in Oberhausen, Germany on November 17, 1961. He recieved the Diplom-Ingenieur degree and the Dr.-Ing. degree in Electrical Engineering from Duisburg University in 1985 and 1989, respectively. He joined the Institut f?r Halbleitertechnik at RWTH Aachen as senior engineer and has been working in the field of metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy for electronic and optoelectronic devices. In 1994 he finished his Habilitation in semiconductor technology and devices with a thesis on ZnSSe based optoelectronic devices. Since then and still at present he has been lecturer for semiconductor technology and devices as well as circuits for communication systems. In 1997 he joined AIXTRON AG in Aachen-Germany where he is now Vice President Corporate Research and Development. In 1999 he was honored as Professor at RWTH Aachen. His main research interests are in the fields of semiconductor growth by MOVPE, materials characterization, device technology, electronic and optoelectronic devices and circuits.

    Prof. Heuken is author and co-author of more than 300 publications in international journals and several invited papers at international conferences. He is currently President of DGKK (German Crystal Growth Association), member of VDE/ITG and board member of OptechNet e.V.. He acts as referee for international Journals. He has been granted several patents in the field of MOVPE technology.
