Title: 科技英文寫作與研究方法 Speaker: Prof. Shou-de Lin 林守德, Dept. of CSIE, NTU Time: 1:20-3:00pm (100 min), Sept. 22, 2008 (Monday) Place: 台大電機系 明達館 231 室 Abstract: This talk provides tips about how to become a successful student (in terms of doing high-quality research) in the graduate level. The aim is to offer not only a survival guide but some suggestions that will help students figure out the road to promising. Several major themes will be covered in this talk. First, I will discuss how to identify a suitable research topic and how to equip oneself with adequate skills to handle upcoming challenges. I will then talk about the essentials of performing high-quality research, including literature survey, methodology design, evaluation setup, and paper writing as well as presentation. The proper mindset, mentality, communication skills, and time management strategies will also be discussed in this talk. Bio: Shou-de Lin holds a BS in EE from National Taiwan University, an MS-EE from the University of Michigan, and an MS in Computational Linguistics and PhD in Computer Science both from the University of Southern California. In 2007, he joined the Computer Science and Information Engineering Department of National Taiwan University as an assistant professor. He leads the Machine Discovery and Social Network Mining Lab in NTU. Before joining NTU, he was a post-doctoral research fellow in the Information Science Group at the Los Alamos National Lab. Prof. Lin's research aims to design intelligent systems for information processing, which generally includes the areas of knowledge discovery and data mining, natural language processing, social network analysis and machine learning. His international recognition includes the best paper award in IEEE Web Intelligent conference 2003, 2nd place in KDDCup 2003, Google Research Award in 2007, and KDDCUP winner in 2008.
